When someone searches for a party store near them, they are usually solving one of two very different problems.

Problem one: they need a specific item. Plates, a tablecloth, a banner, candles. Any large retailer handles this.

Problem two: they need the party to look good and they do not know how to make that happen. That is a design problem wearing the costume of a shopping problem, and the party aisle at a big box store is genuinely bad at solving it.

Understanding which problem you have makes the trip much more efficient. Here is what a local balloon boutique in South Jersey does, and when it is the right stop.

What the party aisle is good at

Credit where it is due. For commodity items, a large retailer is efficient. If you need forty paper plates in a specific color, or a themed tablecloth, or birthday candles, a big store with a big aisle is the sensible answer.

The party aisle is optimized for one thing: you walk in knowing exactly what you want, find it, and leave.

Where it falls short

It falls short the moment you do not know exactly what you want.

Nobody is going to help you design anything. There is no one on the floor whose job is to look at your invitation and tell you which three balloon colors work with it.

The colors are approximate. Party aisle color ranges are narrow. “Pink” is one pink. If you are matching a specific shade, you are matching to whatever they happened to stock.

Finish options barely exist. The matte, chrome, pearl, and agate finishes that give professional balloon work its depth are largely absent from mass retail. Our balloon color guide explains how much of the visual difference comes from finish.

You are doing the inflation yourself. Which is a job with real technique behind it. Overfilled latex loses shape and deflates fast; underfilled latex will not float. See where to get balloons blown up in South Jersey.

Nothing is custom. If you want a garland in your school colors, or a backdrop for a milestone birthday, that is not a thing you buy off a shelf. It is a thing somebody builds.

What a balloon boutique does differently

At Platinum Balloons, the core of the business is the second problem: people who know what the occasion is and want help making it look right.

Design conversation. You describe the event, we talk through what would actually work in that space, for that number of guests, at that time of day. Bringing a photo from Pinterest or Instagram is the fastest version of this conversation.

Color matching against real balloons. Standing in front of the actual colors settles in ninety seconds what a phone call cannot settle at all.

Custom construction. Balloon garlands, arches, columns, bouquets, centerpieces, and marquee number balloons built for a specific event rather than pulled off a rack. The format guide covers what each one is.

Helium balloons ready to go. Inflated bouquets you can pick up.

Party décor and gifts. Alongside the balloon work, our Turnersville store carries party décor and unique gifts, so browsing in person often turns up the piece that ties the table together.

When to go where

A practical way to split it:

Go to a large retailer for: paper goods, disposable tableware, generic themed items, candles, gift wrap, bulk basics.

Go to a balloon boutique for: anything that needs to look designed, anything that needs specific colors, anything that will be the background of photos, anything you want built rather than assembled, and helium.

Plenty of people do both, and there is nothing wrong with that. Plates from one place, the balloon backdrop from another.

The photo test

Here is a filter that resolves most of these decisions.

Ask yourself: what will be in the photographs?

The paper plates will not be in the photographs. The tablecloth might be, slightly. The thing behind the guest of honor when everyone takes their picture will be in every single photograph from the event, and it will be the thing people see when they look back at it in ten years.

Put your effort where the camera is pointing. That is the balloon work, and it is why we suggest concentrating décor at one strong focal point rather than spreading it thinly across a room.

This principle drives our approach across occasions, from baby showers to graduation parties to milestone birthdays to business grand openings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a party supply store near me in Turnersville, NJ?

Platinum Balloons is a balloon boutique located at 9A Shoppers Ln in the Turnersville Square Shopping Center, Turnersville, NJ 08012, open seven days a week. Alongside our custom balloon designs, our store carries party décor and unique gifts.

Are you a party store or a balloon store?

Platinum Balloons is a balloon boutique first. Custom balloon design is the core of what we do, and we also carry party décor and gifts so you can browse in person and pick up what you need for the celebration in one stop.

What is the difference between a balloon store and a party supply aisle?

A party aisle is built for people who know exactly what item they want. A balloon store is built for people who know what the occasion is and want help making it look right. The practical differences are design guidance, a far wider range of balloon colors and finishes, custom construction like garlands and backdrops, and helium inflation done for you.

Do I need an appointment to visit?

No. Walk in during store hours to browse, see balloon colors in person, and talk through ideas. For large custom installations, calling ahead at (856) 606-7370 helps us set aside time to plan the design with you.

What are your store hours?

Our Turnersville balloon store is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, seven days a week. Holiday hours may vary, so we recommend calling (856) 606-7370 before making a trip.

What should I bring when I come in?

A photo of what you have in mind is the single most useful thing, whether that is a Pinterest screenshot or a picture from a friend’s event. If you are matching colors, bring the invitation, a fabric swatch, or a printed logo. Also helpful: your event date, your venue, and roughly how many guests.

What areas do you serve?

We serve customers throughout South Jersey from our Turnersville location, including Washington Township, Sewell, Blackwood, Sicklerville, Deptford, Williamstown, Glassboro, Mullica Hill, and surrounding communities in Gloucester County and Camden County.

What kinds of balloon designs do you make?

Balloon garlands, balloon columns, balloon bouquets, balloon centerpieces, and marquee number balloons, along with larger custom installations designed around a specific event.

Where exactly are you in the shopping center?

Platinum Balloons is located in the Turnersville Square Shopping Center at 9A Shoppers Ln, with parking directly at the storefront. Call (856) 606-7370 or contact us if you need directions.

Color is the decision that determines whether balloon décor looks designed or looks like a pile of balloons. It matters more than size, more than quantity, and considerably more than budget.

It is also the decision people find hardest, because “pick some colors” is an unhelpfully open instruction. Here is a structured way to get to a palette that works.

Start with a source, not a preference

The most reliable palettes are not invented. They are extracted from something that already exists.

Good sources:

The invitation. Someone already made color decisions. Use them.

The cake or dessert table. Balloons that clash with the cake are a problem you will see in every photo.

A school logo for a graduation party.

A brand’s colors for a business event.

A dress, a jersey, or an outfit the guest of honor is wearing.

The room itself. Carpet, walls, and lighting affect how every color reads.

A saved photo. A Pinterest or Instagram screenshot is the single most useful thing to bring into a balloon store.

Starting from a source gives you a palette with internal logic. Starting from “I like purple” usually does not.

Four palette structures that work

1. Tonal. Several shades of one color, light to dark, plus white or a metallic. The simplest structure to execute and almost impossible to get wrong. Ivory through sand through taupe. Blush through rose through deep pink. This is the dominant look in modern event design.

2. One color plus a metallic. Navy and gold. Black and silver. Sage and chrome. The metallic does the work of making it look finished. Reliable across nearly every occasion.

3. Two-color contrast, unevenly weighted. Two colors where one clearly dominates and the second accents. Roughly 70/30 rather than 50/50. An even split tends to read as unresolved.

4. Three-color, one neutral. Two colors plus white, cream, or a metallic acting as the connector. The neutral separates the two colors so neither competes.

Structures that tend to struggle

Too many colors. Beyond three or four, a design starts reading as generic rather than designed. Rainbow is a deliberate choice for a specific kind of party, not a default.

Two colors of equal strength and equal quantity. Splitting evenly between two bold colors makes the eye ping between them.

Colors at identical value. If two colors are the same lightness, they blur together from a distance even when they are quite different up close. Variation in light and dark is what gives a display depth.

Ignoring the room. A palette chosen in a store under bright light behaves differently in a dim hall with beige carpet.

Finish matters as much as color

This is the part most people do not know, and it is why professional balloon work looks different from party aisle balloons in the same colors.

Latex balloons come in multiple finishes:

Standard. Solid, slightly glossy.

Matte. Flat, soft, no shine. Central to the modern neutral look.

Pearl. Subtle iridescent sheen.

Chrome or metallic. Highly reflective, mirror-like.

Confetti. Clear balloons with confetti inside.

Agate or marbled. Patterned surface.

A garland built from three colors in four different finishes has visual depth that the same three colors in one finish does not. This, plus mixed balloon sizes, is most of what separates a professional garland from a homemade one. More on construction in our garland, arch and column guide.

Foil and mylar balloons add another dimension, since their reflective surface behaves differently under flash photography than latex does.

Specific palettes people ask for

Hot pink. Bold and photographs vividly. Strongest when paired with a neutral that lets it dominate: hot pink with white and gold, or hot pink with black. Pairing it with another equally loud color tends to fight.

Pink, white and gold. One of the most requested combinations, and a good example of the three-color structure with a metallic connector. It works across birthdays, showers, and engagements.

Blue and white with hearts. Heart-shaped foil balloons are a common accent for engagements, Valentine’s celebrations, and gender-related events. Shaped foil reads as an accent, not a base, so build the structure in latex and use the shapes as punctuation.

Black and gold. The default milestone birthday palette for a reason. See birthday balloon ideas.

Neutrals. Sand, cream, taupe, sage, ivory. The dominant palette for baby showers and increasingly for bridal events.

Green, black, white and silver. Philadelphia football colors, a steady request across South Jersey during the season. Covered on our Eagles balloons page.

Bring the object

The single most useful piece of advice in this entire post: color names are unreliable, and objects are not.

“Navy,” “burgundy,” “sage,” and “blush” each cover a wide range. Two people using the same word are frequently picturing different colors. A fabric swatch, an invitation, a printed logo, or a photo removes the ambiguity entirely.

That is why we encourage people to visit our Turnersville store rather than describe a palette over the phone. Standing in front of the actual balloons settles it in about ninety seconds.

Matching colors in South Jersey

Platinum Balloons is a local balloon boutique at 9A Shoppers Ln in the Turnersville Square Shopping Center, Turnersville, NJ 08012, open seven days a week. We serve Washington Township, Sewell, Blackwood, Sicklerville, Deptford, Williamstown, Glassboro, Mullica Hill, and the surrounding Gloucester and Camden county communities.

Bring your invitation, your swatch, or your saved photo. Call (856) 606-7370 or send us your event details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you match specific colors for my party theme?

Yes. Color matching is a large part of what we do. Customers regularly come to us with a specific palette in mind, whether that is hot pink, pink white and gold, navy and blush, or colors pulled from an invitation or a school logo. Bring in a photo, a swatch, or the invitation itself and our team will match the design to it.

How many colors should a balloon design use?

Two or three is the reliable range, often with a neutral or metallic acting as a connector. Beyond three or four colors, designs start to read as generic rather than intentional. Tonal palettes built from several shades of a single color are the simplest structure to execute well.

What balloon colors go well with hot pink?

Hot pink works best when paired with colors that let it dominate rather than compete. White and gold, black, or a soft neutral all work. Pairing hot pink with another equally saturated color tends to make the eye struggle.

What is the most popular balloon color combination?

Pink, white and gold remains one of the most requested. Black and gold is the standard milestone birthday palette, and neutral palettes built from cream, sand, taupe, and sage dominate shower and bridal work.

What is the difference between matte, chrome and pearl balloons?

These are finishes rather than colors. Matte is flat with no shine, chrome is highly reflective and mirror-like, and pearl has a subtle iridescent sheen. Mixing finishes within one palette is much of what gives professional balloon work its depth.

How do I match balloons to my invitation?

Bring the physical invitation into the store. Color names are unreliable because terms like navy, burgundy, and blush each cover a wide range, but matching to an actual printed object removes the guesswork entirely.

Do balloon colors look different in photos?

Yes. Finish affects this most. Chrome and metallic balloons reflect flash strongly, matte balloons absorb light and photograph softly, and room lighting shifts how every color reads. Designs built for a photo area benefit from mixed finishes for this reason.

Can you match my company’s brand colors?

Yes. Bring a printed piece, a business card, a photo of your signage, or a hex code. Where a brand color has no close balloon equivalent, a common approach is to build the structure in a neutral or metallic and carry the brand color through accent balloons.

Where can I see balloon colors in person in South Jersey?

Visit Platinum Balloons at 9A Shoppers Ln in the Turnersville Square Shopping Center, Turnersville, NJ 08012, open seven days a week. Call (856) 606-7370 or contact us before you come in if you want to talk through a specific design.

A grand opening has one measurable goal: get people who were driving past to stop and come in. Almost every decision about the décor should be judged against that.

Balloons are unusually good at this job, which is why they have been the default for storefront openings for decades. They are visible from a moving car, they are unmistakably a signal that something is happening today, and they photograph well enough to carry the event across social media afterward.

Here is how to plan balloon décor for a business event in South Jersey.

Design for the road, not the room

The single most common mistake in grand opening décor is designing it for someone standing at the door rather than someone driving past at 40 miles per hour.

From a car, a person registers two things: color and shape. Detail is invisible. That argues for:

High contrast. Colors that separate cleanly against your building and against the sky.

Height. Vertical elements read from further away than horizontal ones.

Motion. Anything that moves in wind catches peripheral vision.

Clear placement. The display should mark the entrance, not the parking lot corner.

This is why columns and arches dominate grand opening work while garlands, which are the star of most private events, play a supporting role. Our format guide covers the differences.

Brand colors

A business event is the one context where the color palette is not a creative decision. It is already set.

Bring your brand colors as something concrete: a printed piece, a business card, a sign, a hex code, or a photo of your storefront. Balloon colors come in fixed ranges, so an exact match is not always possible, but the goal is a palette that reads unmistakably as your brand at a glance. Matching to a physical object gets you far closer than matching to a color name.

Where a brand color has no close balloon equivalent, a common solution is to build the structure in a neutral, white, black, or metallic, and carry the brand color through accent balloons. It still reads as branded without a near-miss color drawing attention to itself.

Our balloon color guide goes deeper into building palettes.

The ribbon cutting

If the opening includes a ribbon cutting with local officials or a chamber of commerce, that moment produces the photo that appears in press coverage and on every attendee’s social feed.

Plan the balloon work around that frame specifically. An arch over the ribbon, or columns flanking it, gives the photo a defined, branded background. Without it, the photo is people holding scissors in front of a blank wall.

Think about where the photographer stands, what is behind the group, and whether the business name is visible in the shot.

Outdoor conditions

Most grand openings happen outside, and outdoor conditions are the hardest environment for balloons.

Wind is the primary adversary. Anything freestanding needs substantially more weight than it would indoors, and tall columns catch wind like a sail. Sheltered placement near the building helps.

Heat and sun cause helium to expand and escape faster, and direct sun is particularly rough on latex. Darker colors absorb more heat than light ones.

Cold contracts helium, so winter openings will see arrangements look deflated outdoors even when they were perfect inside.

The practical response for business events is to lean on air-filled construction wherever possible. Air-filled columns and arches are not fighting gravity, hold up far longer, and can be built before the event rather than in the final hour. The full picture is in how long helium balloons last.

Beyond the grand opening

Grand openings are the obvious case, but the recurring business need is broader:

Anniversary celebrations. A year-number marquee in brand colors at the entrance.

Product launches and open houses.

Company parties and holiday events. Internal celebrations where the design rules relax.

Trade shows and expo booths. Where the challenge is standing out in a room of identical booths.

Customer appreciation days and seasonal promotions.

Sports and game day promotions. Bars, restaurants, and retail businesses building a football atmosphere. We cover this specifically on our Philadelphia Eagles and game day balloons page.

The businesses that get the most out of balloon décor tend to treat it as a recurring promotional tool rather than a one-time opening expense.

Working with a local balloon company

Business events have constraints that consumer events do not: fixed dates that cannot move, brand standards, site access rules, and a need for the whole thing to be finished and looking right before the first customer arrives rather than fifteen minutes after.

Those constraints are easier to manage with a local company you can call directly and visit in person. Platinum Balloons is at 9A Shoppers Ln in the Turnersville Square Shopping Center, Turnersville, NJ 08012, serving businesses throughout Gloucester and Camden counties including Washington Township, Sewell, Blackwood, Sicklerville, Deptford, Williamstown, Glassboro, and Mullica Hill.

We are part of the Platinum Event Planning family of businesses alongside Platinum House of Sweets, Platinum Parking, and Platinum Driving, a locally owned company serving South Jersey for more than 30 years. We have also run a grand opening of our own, covered by PHL17, which you can read about on our story page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you do balloon décor for a business grand opening?

Yes. Platinum Balloons creates balloon arches, entrance columns, branded color displays, and décor for grand openings, ribbon cuttings, corporate events, and company celebrations throughout South Jersey. We build the design around your brand colors.

What is the best balloon setup for a grand opening?

Vertical, high-contrast elements at the entrance. Columns and arches read from a passing car in a way that lower horizontal designs do not, and they mark the door so people know where to go. If there is a ribbon cutting, framing that spot gives the press photo a branded background.

Can you match balloons to our company’s brand colors?

Yes. Bring something physical, such as a printed piece, a business card, a photo of your signage, or a hex code. Balloon colors come in fixed ranges, so where an exact match is not available a common approach is to build the structure in a neutral or metallic and carry the brand color through accents.

How do balloons hold up outdoors at a business event?

With the right construction, well. Air-filled columns and arches hold up far better than helium, which loses lift in heat and contracts in cold. Wind is the main variable outdoors, so freestanding pieces need substantially more weight than they would indoors, and sheltered placement near the building helps.

Do you work with restaurants and retail businesses on promotions?

Yes. Beyond grand openings, balloon décor is used for anniversary celebrations, product launches, open houses, customer appreciation days, seasonal promotions, and game day atmosphere for bars and restaurants.

What kind of corporate events do you decorate?

Grand openings, ribbon cuttings, anniversary celebrations, product launches, open houses, company parties, holiday events, trade show booths, and seasonal promotions.

How far in advance should a business book balloon décor?

As soon as the date is fixed. Business event dates rarely move, so the earlier the order is placed, the more certainty there is around color availability and scheduling. Call (856) 606-7370 with your date.

Do balloon displays work for trade show booths?

Yes. The challenge at a trade show is visual separation from identical neighboring booths, and vertical balloon elements in brand colors are an effective way to create it at eye level and above.

Where is Platinum Balloons located?

Platinum Balloons is located in the Turnersville Square Shopping Center at 9A Shoppers Ln, Turnersville, NJ 08012, open seven days a week. Call (856) 606-7370 or contact us with your business event details.

There is a persistent assumption that balloons are for children’s parties and weddings are for flowers. That has not been true for several years.

Modern balloon work in a wedding context looks nothing like a birthday party. It is tonal, restrained, often neutral or metallic, and built to sit alongside florals rather than compete with them. Done well, most guests do not register it as “balloons” at all. They register it as a designed space.

Here is how balloon décor fits into the run of events around a wedding in South Jersey.

The engagement party

Engagement parties are usually the first celebration after the proposal and they tend to be relatively informal: a restaurant back room, a family home, a backyard.

The most common balloon element is a photo moment. A garland or small backdrop, frequently incorporating letters or a marquee element, positioned where the couple will stand for pictures. Because this is the event where the ring gets photographed constantly, a clean background behind the couple does real work.

Palettes skew simple. White and cream with gold or silver. Blush and ivory. Or a single accent color pulled from whatever the couple is already using.

Entrance columns are practical here too, particularly at restaurants where nothing can be attached to the walls. Our format breakdown covers when each structure makes sense.

The bridal shower

Bridal showers are where balloon work has become most established, and the design conventions closely mirror what happens at baby showers: a garland behind the dessert or gift table, a designated photo backdrop, and centerpieces on guest tables.

The difference is tone. Bridal shower palettes tend more sophisticated than shower-adjacent pastels. Common directions:

Tonal neutrals. Cream, ivory, sand, champagne, white.

Blush and gold. The default, and it is the default because it works.

All white. Mixed sizes and finishes, matte and chrome and pearl in one palette. Understated and expensive-looking.

Pulled from the wedding. Matching the shower palette to the actual wedding colors ties the events together.

Bachelorette parties

Less formal, more color, more willingness to be bold. Bachelorette décor tends toward strong single colors, metallics, and letter balloons spelling something. Because these events are often at an Airbnb or a rented house, freestanding formats matter: columns and backdrop frames need no attachment and travel well.

Rehearsal dinners

Frequently overlooked. A rehearsal dinner is usually a seated meal in a private room, so centerpieces are the highest-value element. Keep them low enough to talk across, or tall enough to clear head height entirely. Anything in between blocks conversation for the whole meal.

The wedding itself

Balloon work at weddings is generally deployed in specific zones rather than throughout:

Cocktail hour. A garland or installation in the cocktail space, where people are standing and photographing.

The photo wall. A dedicated backdrop, often combined with signage or a neon element.

The entrance. An arch framing the doorway guests pass through.

The dance floor or bar. Ceiling or wall work in the space that photographs most at night.

The key principle is restraint. Balloon work that is tonal, matched to the wedding palette, and confined to one or two zones reads as designed. Balloon work spread everywhere in multiple colors reads as a birthday party.

Why color matching matters more here than anywhere else

Weddings run on palettes, and everyone involved is already matching to them: the florist, the linens, the bridesmaid dresses, the stationery. Balloon work that is close but not exact is more noticeable in that context than it would be at a birthday.

Bring the physical reference. A swatch of the bridesmaid dress fabric, the invitation, a piece of the linen, a photo of the florals. Matching to an object is reliable; matching to a color name is not. Our balloon color guide goes into this in more depth.

Timing across a wedding season

Wedding-adjacent events cluster in spring and fall in South Jersey, which overlaps with graduation season on one end and holiday events on the other. Booking early is straightforwardly better.

The practical advantage of balloon work here is that air-filled installations can be built ahead and hold up for days, which matters when a venue gives you a narrow setup window. Helium elements are the pieces that need day-of attention, covered in how long helium balloons last.

Thirty years of South Jersey events

Platinum Balloons is part of the Platinum Event Planning family of businesses, alongside Platinum House of Sweets, Platinum Parking, and Platinum Driving. It is a locally owned company that has been serving South Jersey for more than 30 years, which means the team has been part of a great many weddings, showers, and engagement celebrations in this area. You can read that history on our story page and more about the business here.

Our balloon boutique is at 9A Shoppers Ln in the Turnersville Square Shopping Center, Turnersville, NJ 08012, open seven days a week, serving Washington Township, Sewell, Blackwood, Sicklerville, Deptford, Williamstown, Glassboro, Mullica Hill, and the surrounding Gloucester and Camden county communities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have engagement and bridal shower balloons?

Yes. Platinum Balloons creates engagement party balloon displays, bridal shower balloon garlands and backdrops, and elegant arrangements in custom color palettes. We are part of the Platinum Event Planning family of businesses, which has served South Jersey events for more than 30 years.

Are balloons appropriate for a wedding?

Yes, and they have become common. Modern wedding balloon work is tonal and restrained, usually neutral or metallic, and deployed in specific zones like cocktail hour, a photo wall, or the entrance rather than throughout the venue. Done that way it complements florals rather than competing with them.

What are the most popular bridal shower balloon colors?

Tonal neutrals like cream, ivory, sand, and champagne are the most requested, along with blush paired with gold. All-white designs that mix matte, chrome, and pearl finishes in different sizes are a consistently elegant option.

Can you match balloons to my wedding colors?

Yes. Color matching is a large part of what we do. Bring a physical reference to our Turnersville store, such as a fabric swatch from the bridesmaid dresses, the invitation, a linen sample, or a photo of the florals. Matching to an object is far more precise than matching to a color name.

What balloon design works best for an engagement party photo spot?

A garland or compact backdrop positioned where the couple will stand, often incorporating letters or a marquee element. A clean, coordinated background matters at an engagement party because the ring and the couple get photographed repeatedly.

What if the venue does not allow anything attached to the walls?

Freestanding balloon columns and backdrop frames solve this, since neither requires wall attachment. This restriction is common in restaurants, hotels, and rented venues, so it is worth asking before you settle on a design.

Do you do bachelorette party balloons?

Yes. Bachelorette décor typically uses bolder single colors, metallics, and letter balloons. Because these events are often at rented houses, freestanding formats that need no attachment tend to work best.

How far in advance should I book balloon décor for a wedding or shower?

As early as your date is confirmed. Spring and fall are the busiest wedding stretches in South Jersey and they overlap with graduation and holiday season. Call (856) 606-7370 once you have the date.

Where is Platinum Balloons located?

Platinum Balloons is located in the Turnersville Square Shopping Center at 9A Shoppers Ln, Turnersville, NJ 08012, open seven days a week. Call (856) 606-7370 or contact us to discuss your event.

Graduation season in South Jersey is compressed and crowded. Ceremonies cluster into a few weeks in late spring, parties stack onto the same weekends, and families frequently find themselves planning around two or three other celebrations happening on the same day.

Balloon décor for a graduation has one job that distinguishes it from every other occasion: it has to say which school, without a sign. That means color is not a design preference here. It is the core requirement.

School colors are the whole design

Nearly every graduation balloon design starts with a two-color or three-color scheme pulled directly from the school. Getting them right matters more than people expect, because a school’s colors are specific, and a near-miss reads as wrong to anyone who attended.

The most reliable way to nail it is to bring something physical. A class shirt, a hoodie, a program, a yearbook, a photo of the gym floor. Matching to an actual object beats matching to a name, since “maroon” and “navy” each cover a wide range.

South Jersey has a lot of schools with strong, well-known color identities across Gloucester and Camden counties, plus college palettes for the students moving on. If the graduate is heading to a specific college, incorporating both the high school colors and the college colors into one design is a common and effective approach: high school colors in the main structure, college colors as the accent, or the reverse.

Our balloon color guide covers how to build a working palette when the school colors are difficult to pair.

Design formats that work for graduation parties

Backdrop with the graduation year. The dominant format. A balloon garland or wall with marquee numbers spelling the year, positioned as a designated photo spot. Every guest photographs the graduate in front of it, and the year in balloons is what dates the photo permanently.

Garland along the dessert or food table. Graduation parties are food-centered, often buffet style, sometimes in a garage or on a patio. A garland along the serving table frames the busiest area of the party.

Entrance columns. Freestanding columns in school colors at the driveway, walkway, or door. These are especially practical for graduation parties because so many of them are held outdoors or in spaces where nothing can be attached to walls. See garland versus arch versus column for how the formats differ.

Mailbox and front door arrangements. Simple, visible from the street, and the thing that tells the neighborhood a graduation happened. Usually a helium bouquet on a weight.

Table centerpieces. For seated or tented setups, kept low enough to talk across.

The outdoor problem

Most South Jersey graduation parties happen outside, in late May or June, in full sun. This is the hardest condition for balloons and it deserves planning.

Heat causes helium to expand and escape faster. Direct sunlight is rough on latex specifically, and darker school colors absorb more heat than lighter ones, so a navy or maroon balloon in June sun is working against you twice.

Practical responses:

Lean more heavily on foil balloons, which hold up far better.

Use air-filled construction for the large pieces. Garlands and columns built with air are not fighting gravity at all and hold up dramatically longer than helium in heat.

Place installations in shade where the design allows.

Weight everything more than you think you need to. Even a light breeze moves an underweighted arrangement.

Keep the gap between setup and party as short as practical for any helium pieces.

The detail on all of this is in how long helium balloons last.

Timing and the graduation rush

This is the most important practical point in the post. Graduation season is the busiest stretch of the year for every balloon business in South Jersey, and it is concentrated into a handful of weekends.

Order as early as you can. Once the ceremony schedule is published and you know your party date, that is the moment to call, not the week before. Specific school colors in specific balloon sizes are finite, and late spring is when they run thin.

Call (856) 606-7370 with your date as soon as it is set and we will tell you what is workable.

Multi-party weekends

A pattern worth planning for: many families attend two or three graduation parties on the same Saturday, and some host one while attending others.

If you are hosting, that means guests may arrive across a wide window rather than all at once, and the décor needs to still look right three hours in. Air-filled work handles this far better than helium.

If you are attending several, a balloon bouquet as a gift for each graduate is a common approach, and ordering them all at once is simpler than three separate trips.

Planning a graduation party in Gloucester or Camden County

Platinum Balloons builds graduation balloon garlands, columns, backdrops, marquee number balloons, and bouquets in school colors for high school and college graduations throughout South Jersey.

We are located at 9A Shoppers Ln in the Turnersville Square Shopping Center, Turnersville, NJ 08012, open seven days a week, serving Washington Township, Sewell, Blackwood, Sicklerville, Deptford, Williamstown, Glassboro, Mullica Hill, and surrounding communities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you do graduation balloons in school colors?

Yes. Platinum Balloons builds graduation balloon garlands, columns, marquee number balloons, and bouquets in school colors for high school and college graduations across Gloucester and Camden counties.

How do I make sure you get my school’s colors exactly right?

Bring something physical. A class shirt, a hoodie, a program, or a photo of the school colors in use is far more precise than a color name, since shades like maroon, navy, and forest green each cover a wide range. Our team will match the balloons to what you bring in.

When should I order graduation balloons?

As early as possible. Graduation season is the busiest stretch of the year and it is compressed into a few weekends across South Jersey. Once your party date is set, that is the time to call (856) 606-7370, not the week before.

What is the best balloon setup for a graduation party?

A backdrop or garland incorporating the graduation year in marquee numbers, positioned as a designated photo spot. Guests photograph the graduate in front of it all afternoon, and the year in balloons permanently dates the photos.

Will balloons hold up outdoors at a June graduation party?

With the right choices, yes. Air-filled garlands and columns hold up far better than helium in heat, foil outperforms latex, shade helps considerably, and lighter colors absorb less heat than dark ones. Tell us the party is outdoors and we will design for it.

Can you combine high school and college colors in one design?

Yes, and it is a common request for graduates heading to a specific school. The usual approach is high school colors in the main structure with college colors as the accent, or the reverse, so both are represented without the palette becoming muddy.

Do balloon garlands last long enough for an all-day graduation party?

Yes. Garlands are typically built with air rather than helium, so they are not losing lift over the course of the day. A well-built garland can be installed the day before and commonly holds up for days.

What about balloons for the mailbox or front door?

A helium bouquet on a weight is the standard choice, and it is what signals to the neighborhood that a graduation is being celebrated. Because it uses helium, plan on same-day pickup for latex, or use foil for a longer window.

A first birthday and a fiftieth birthday are both birthdays, and they need almost nothing in common decoratively. The guest count is different, the photo expectations are different, the venue is different, and the person being celebrated has an entirely different relationship to being celebrated.

Here is how balloon décor changes across the ages, and what to think about when planning one in South Jersey.

First birthdays

First birthdays are for the parents. The child will not remember it. The photos will exist forever. Plan accordingly.

The near-universal format is a dedicated photo area: a balloon garland or backdrop behind a high chair or cake smash setup, usually incorporating a large marquee “1.” The smash cake photo is the single most-repeated image from any first birthday, and the balloon work behind it is what makes that photo look intentional.

Palettes tend soft: neutrals, pastels, or a single accent color against cream and white. Themed palettes pulled from a character or motif are also common.

One practical note. Toddlers and balloons interact. Latex fragments are a genuine choking hazard for small children, so keep the balloon work above reach where possible, and clean up promptly if anything pops.

Ages two through nine

This is theme territory. Children in this range have specific and non-negotiable opinions about what the party is about, and the balloon work should follow the theme rather than lead it.

Practically, that usually means pulling the color palette from the theme and building a garland or backdrop in those colors, then letting printed or licensed items carry the specific characters. A balloon garland in the right three colors reads as “on theme” without needing to be literal about it.

Kids’ parties also favor durability. Air-filled garlands and columns survive a room full of children considerably better than helium bouquets on weights, which will be pulled down within the hour. That distinction is covered in garland versus arch versus column.

Ten through fifteen

The awkward middle. Old enough to care about how it looks, young enough that it is still a party rather than an event.

This age group is heavily influenced by what they have seen online, which means the designs requested are often the same modern garland and backdrop formats used at adult events, just in brighter or more specific colors. Take the request seriously. A twelve-year-old who wanted a particular look and got a generic one will notice.

Sweet 16

Sweet 16s are effectively small weddings in terms of décor expectation, and they are frequently the largest balloon job a family will order outside of an actual wedding.

The standard components are an entrance moment, a photo backdrop, and table centerpieces. Marquee “16” numbers are near-universal. Palettes skew toward metallics paired with a strong accent color, or toward a fully coordinated scheme matched to the dress.

Venue rules matter a great deal here, because Sweet 16s are usually held in rented spaces rather than homes. Ask about wall attachment before committing to a design.

Twenty-first birthdays

Usually smaller and less formal than a Sweet 16, often at home or in a reserved section of a restaurant. Marquee “21” balloons plus a compact garland is the common configuration. Bold colors and metallics dominate.

Milestone birthdays: 30, 40, 50, 60 and beyond

Milestone birthdays are where the most interesting balloon work happens, because the person being celebrated usually has a defined aesthetic and the party is designed around it rather than around a theme.

Formats:

Marquee numbers as the centerpiece of a backdrop or garland. This is the defining element.

Black and gold, black and silver, or a tonal palette in one sophisticated color.

Entrance columns where guests arrive.

Table centerpieces for seated dinners, kept low enough to talk across.

Surprise parties add a logistical wrinkle: the setup has to happen without the guest of honor seeing it. Air-filled installations help here because they can be built earlier in the day and moved into position, rather than requiring a rush job in the final hour.

Adult birthdays that are not milestones

Not every birthday needs an installation. A well-made balloon bouquet on a kitchen table, at a desk, or by a front door does real work for a fraction of the effort. These use helium, so the timing window is shorter. See how long helium balloons last and where to get balloons blown up in South Jersey for planning.

Football and sports birthdays

In South Jersey, a meaningful share of birthdays fall during football season and get built around it. Green, black, white and silver balloon arrangements combined with birthday elements are a steady request, particularly for lifelong Philadelphia fans. We cover that specifically on our Philadelphia Eagles and game day balloons page.

Choosing colors

Birthday palettes are less constrained than shower or wedding palettes, which makes them harder rather than easier. A few reliable structures:

One color plus a metallic. Almost always works.

Tonal. Several shades of one color, light to dark, plus white.

Two-color contrast. Strongest when one color dominates and the second accents rather than splitting evenly.

Pulled from something. The invitation, the cake, a jersey, a dress, the room itself.

Our balloon color guide goes into building a palette in more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you make balloon décor for birthday parties?

Yes. Platinum Balloons creates birthday balloon bouquets, marquee number balloons, balloon garlands, columns, centerpieces, and backdrop displays for children’s parties, milestone birthdays, Sweet 16s, and adult celebrations throughout South Jersey.

What are marquee number balloons?

Marquee numbers are large foil number balloons, either standing on their own or built into a garland or backdrop. They are how a birthday display communicates an age without a printed sign, and they are the defining element of most milestone birthday designs.

What is the best balloon setup for a first birthday?

A balloon garland or backdrop behind the cake smash or high chair area, usually with a large marquee “1.” First birthday photos are the lasting product of the day, so concentrating the décor at the photo spot gives the best result.

What balloon colors work best for a milestone birthday?

Black paired with gold or silver is the most common milestone palette, along with tonal schemes built from several shades of one color. For a 30th, 40th, 50th or 60th, designing around the guest of honor’s own taste tends to produce a better result than a generic birthday palette.

Are balloons safe around small children?

Uninflated latex and popped latex fragments are a choking hazard for young children, so balloon work at a toddler party should be kept above reach where practical and cleaned up promptly if anything pops. Foil balloons and air-filled installations positioned out of reach reduce the risk.

Will helium balloons last through a whole birthday party?

Standard 11-inch latex balloons generally float for 8 to 12 hours, which covers most parties if they are inflated the same day. Foil balloons last considerably longer. For all-day or next-day events, air-filled garlands and columns are the more reliable option.

Can you do sports-themed or Eagles birthday balloons?

Yes. We create football and Philadelphia Eagles-themed arrangements in green, black, white, and silver, and they combine well with birthday elements for fans of any age. Call (856) 606-7370 to ask about current game day designs.

Can you match balloons to a specific theme or character?

Yes. The most effective approach is usually to pull the color palette from the theme and build the balloon work in those colors, which reads as on-theme without needing to be literal. Bring in a photo or the invitation and we will build around it.

Baby showers have changed. The crepe paper and paper bells of a decade ago have largely given way to a single well-designed focal point, usually a balloon installation behind a dessert table or gift table, built to photograph well.

That shift is worth understanding before you plan, because it changes where your effort should go. Here is how to think about balloon décor for a shower, from palette to placement.

Start with the photo, not the room

The most useful planning question for a modern shower is: where is the guest of honor going to stand for pictures?

Every shower produces the same core set of photos. The expectant parent in front of something. The group shot. The dessert table. If you build one strong balloon moment at that spot, it carries the entire event visually and it lives in every photo anyone takes.

Spreading a modest décor budget thinly across a whole room produces a room that looks mildly decorated. Concentrating it in one place produces a room that looks designed. The second approach photographs dramatically better.

Palettes that work

Baby shower palettes have moved well past pink and blue.

Neutrals. Sand, cream, taupe, ivory, sage, and white. This is the dominant modern look, and it is popular partly because it photographs beautifully and partly because it works regardless of whether the parents know the baby’s sex.

Soft pastels. Blush, powder blue, butter yellow, mint. Traditional but still fresh when the balloon sizes are mixed rather than uniform.

Jewel tones. Emerald, navy, deep rose. Less common for showers and more striking for it, particularly for evening events or fall and winter showers.

Single-color tonal. One color across several shades, from palest to deepest, plus white or metallic accents. Simple to execute, consistently elegant.

Themed palettes. Safari, boho, celestial, woodland. These pull colors from the theme rather than from convention.

We go deeper into palette building and color matching in our balloon color guide.

Design formats that suit showers

The dessert table garland. The most requested shower design. A balloon garland draped along the wall behind the food or cake table, mixing sizes and finishes in the shower palette. It frames the table, fills the camera frame, and it is built with air so it can be installed ahead of the event.

The full backdrop. A larger balloon wall, often on a frame, sometimes combined with a name in marquee letters or a mesh panel. This is the dedicated photo station approach.

Balloon columns flanking the entrance. Useful when the venue does not allow anything attached to walls, which is common in rented halls and restaurant back rooms. Columns are freestanding and need no attachment at all.

Centerpieces. Small arrangements on each guest table. Watch the height. A centerpiece at seated eye level makes conversation across the table awkward, so go low or go well above head height.

Balloon bouquets. The simplest option, portable and quick. These use helium, so timing matters more. See how long helium balloons last for planning.

If the terminology is unfamiliar, our breakdown of garlands, arches and columns covers what each format is and where it works.

Gender reveal considerations

If the shower is doubling as a reveal, the décor plan needs a specific structure: everything visible before the reveal has to be neutral, and the reveal element itself carries the color.

That usually means a neutral garland or backdrop as the base, with the reveal handled separately. Plan the sequence in advance, including who knows, who is holding what, and where people will be standing, because a reveal that happens with half the guests facing the wrong direction is a reveal nobody photographed.

Venue questions worth asking early

South Jersey showers happen in a mix of homes, restaurant back rooms, fire halls, community rooms, and rented event spaces. The venue constrains the design more than most people expect.

Ask about:

Attachment. Can anything go on the walls? Many venues say no. That answer points you toward freestanding columns or a backdrop frame rather than a wall garland.

Access time. How early can you get into the room? Air-filled balloon work needs setup time, and a one-hour window before guests arrive is tight for a large installation.

Ceiling height. Low ceilings change what a backdrop or column can look like.

Outdoor exposure. Sun and heat are hard on latex. Summer showers on a patio need different balloon choices than indoor ones.

Timing your order

Shower dates are usually set well in advance, which is an advantage. Ordering early means more color options and a calmer setup day.

Air-filled work like garlands and columns can be built ahead and holds up for days, so the timing pressure is lower than people assume. Helium bouquets are the pieces that need day-of attention. Our post on where to get balloons blown up in South Jersey covers how to sequence that.

Call (856) 606-7370 with your date as soon as you have it, and we will tell you what is workable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you do baby shower balloons in South Jersey?

Yes. Baby showers are one of our most requested occasions. Platinum Balloons designs baby shower balloon garlands, arches, backdrops, centerpieces, and color-themed bouquets from our Turnersville store, serving Gloucester and Camden counties.

What are the most popular baby shower balloon colors right now?

Neutral palettes are the dominant modern choice: sand, cream, taupe, ivory, sage, and white. Soft pastels remain popular, and tonal palettes built from several shades of one color are a consistently elegant option. Neutrals have the added advantage of working whether or not the baby’s sex is known.

What is the best balloon setup for a baby shower?

For most showers, a balloon garland behind the dessert or gift table is the highest-impact choice. It frames the table, it appears in nearly every photo taken at the event, and it is built with air so it can be installed before guests arrive.

How far in advance should I order baby shower balloons?

Earlier is better, particularly for garlands, backdrops, and full installations where specific colors need to be sourced. Call (856) 606-7370 with your shower date as soon as you have it and we will tell you what is workable.

Can you match balloons to my baby shower invitation?

Yes. Color matching is a large part of what we do. Bring the invitation itself, a photo, or a fabric swatch to our Turnersville store and our team will build the palette around it.

What if my venue does not allow anything on the walls?

Freestanding balloon columns and backdrop frames solve this, since neither needs wall attachment. It is worth asking your venue about attachment rules before you decide on a design, because it is a common restriction in rented halls and restaurant back rooms.

Do balloon garlands last long enough for a shower?

Yes, comfortably. Garlands are typically built with air rather than helium, so they are not fighting gravity. A well-built garland can be installed the day before and will commonly hold up for days afterward.

Do you do gender reveal balloons?

Call our store at (856) 606-7370 to discuss reveal designs and what we can put together for your event. If the shower is also the reveal, plan the neutral base décor and the reveal element as two separate pieces.

Where can I see examples of your baby shower work?

Visit our store at 9A Shoppers Ln in the Turnersville Square Shopping Center to see displays in person, or contact us and we will talk through ideas for your specific shower.

Most people come into a balloon store with a picture on their phone and no vocabulary for it. That is completely normal. The design names are not intuitive, they overlap, and social media uses them interchangeably.

Here is a plain breakdown of the main balloon structures, what each one is actually for, and how to figure out which one matches the picture in your head.

Balloon garland

A balloon garland is a flowing, organic cluster of balloons in mixed sizes, built along a length rather than into a rigid shape. It is the design that dominates modern event photography, and it is almost certainly what you saw on Pinterest.

The defining feature is irregularity. A garland mixes large, medium, and small balloons, often in several finishes and a coordinated color palette, clustered so the eye reads a continuous ribbon rather than individual balloons. Good garlands have movement and asymmetry built in deliberately.

Garlands are attached to something. A wall, a table edge, a staircase railing, an arbor, a doorframe, a backdrop stand. They are typically built with air, not helium, which is why they can be installed ahead of time and hold up for days. We cover why that matters in how long helium balloons last.

Best for: photo backdrops, dessert tables, entryways, stair rails, behind a head table, storefront windows.

Balloon arch

An arch is a structured, symmetrical span that frames an opening. Think of it as architecture rather than decoration. It defines a threshold: a doorway, a stage, an aisle, an entrance.

Classic arches are built on a frame with balloons of consistent size, producing an even, regular curve. They read as formal and intentional. That regularity is the whole point.

The line blurs because there is also the “organic arch,” which applies garland technique to an arch shape, producing something fuller and more asymmetrical that still frames an opening. When someone says arch today, they could mean either. Bringing a photo resolves it instantly.

Best for: entrances, ceremony aisles, stages, ribbon cuttings, anywhere guests physically pass through.

Balloon column

A column is a vertical stack, usually built on a weighted base with a center pole, standing on its own. Columns are the workhorses of event décor because they need no wall and no ceiling attachment.

They are typically deployed in pairs to flank something: a doorway, a stage, a check-in table, a photo area. A single column reads as unfinished. Two columns read as deliberate framing.

Columns are also the practical choice when there is nothing to attach to. Outdoor events, tented events, rented halls with strict no-adhesive rules, and venues where you cannot touch the walls all point toward columns. This comes up frequently in grand opening and corporate work.

Best for: flanking entrances, stages, outdoor events, venues with décor restrictions.

Balloon backdrop

A backdrop is a full wall of balloons, sometimes on a frame, sometimes combined with a panel, a mesh, or a marquee element. It is the largest of the standard formats and it exists for one reason: photos.

If the goal is a designated spot where everyone takes pictures, a backdrop is the answer. It is also where marquee number balloons, letter balloons, and custom signage typically get integrated.

Best for: photo stations, milestone birthdays, showers, graduations, anywhere you expect a hundred phone photos.

Balloon bouquet

The simplest format and still the most commonly ordered. A cluster of helium balloons tied to a weight. Bouquets are portable, quick, and inexpensive relative to installed work.

Because bouquets use helium, float time governs them. This is the one format where timing genuinely constrains your planning, which is covered in detail in where to get balloons blown up in South Jersey.

Best for: table centerpieces, gifts, mailbox and front door displays, smaller gatherings, anything you need to carry.

Balloon centerpieces

Centerpieces are scaled-down arrangements built for tables. They can be helium bouquets on weights, or small air-filled sculptures on a stand. The design question is usually height, since a centerpiece that blocks sightlines across a table makes conversation awkward. Either go low or go tall enough to clear head height.

Best for: seated dinners, reception tables, banquet rooms.

Marquee numbers and letters

Large foil numbers and letters, either freestanding or integrated into a garland or backdrop. These are how a design says “40” or “GRAD” or a name without a printed sign.

They pair naturally with garlands and backdrops, and they show up constantly in milestone birthday work and graduation displays.

How to choose

Work backward from three questions.

Where are the photos happening? If there is a designated photo spot, put your budget into a garland or backdrop there. Guests will look at it all night and it will exist in every picture from the event.

Is there something to attach to? Yes points toward garlands and backdrops. No points toward columns and bouquets. Ask your venue before you decide, because “no adhesive on the walls” is a common rule and finding out on setup day is unpleasant.

Do guests pass through anything? A defined entrance, a doorway, a ceremony aisle. That is what arches are for. If nobody passes through anything, an arch is decoration without a purpose.

If the answer to all three is unclear, bring us the photo. That is genuinely the fastest path, and it is why we encourage people to visit the store rather than describe a design over the phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a balloon garland and a balloon arch?

A balloon arch is a structured, symmetrical shape that frames an entrance, a doorway, or a stage, usually built on a frame with balloons of a consistent size. A balloon garland is a fuller, more organic design that mixes balloon sizes and finishes into a flowing cluster, and it can be draped along a wall, a table, a staircase, or a backdrop. Garlands have become the more popular look for photo backdrops and dessert tables. Arches work best when you want a clear, framed entry point.

What is an organic balloon garland?

An organic garland is the style that deliberately mixes balloon sizes and finishes in an irregular, flowing arrangement rather than a uniform repeating pattern. The irregularity is intentional and is what gives it the soft, natural look common in modern event photography.

Are balloon garlands filled with helium?

Generally no. Garlands are typically built with air and attached to a surface or frame, since nothing needs to float. This is why they can be installed in advance and hold up far longer than helium arrangements.

What is a balloon column used for?

Columns are freestanding vertical balloon stacks on a weighted base. They are used to flank entrances, stages, and check-in tables, and they are the practical choice for outdoor events or venues that do not allow anything attached to the walls.

Do I need a wall for a balloon garland?

Not necessarily a wall, but you need something to attach it to. Walls, table edges, stair railings, arbors, doorframes, and freestanding backdrop frames all work. If your venue has nothing available, columns or a freestanding backdrop frame are the alternatives.

What is the best balloon design for a photo backdrop?

A garland on a backdrop frame, often combined with marquee numbers or letters, is the standard choice for a dedicated photo area. It fills the frame of a phone camera well and holds up throughout an event because it is air-filled.

Can you combine different balloon designs at one event?

Yes, and most well-designed events do. A common structure is a garland or backdrop at the photo area, columns flanking the entrance, and bouquets or centerpieces on the tables, all sharing one color palette.

How do I know which design I want?

Bring a photo. Screenshots from Pinterest or Instagram are the most useful thing a customer can walk in with, because design names vary but a picture does not. Call (856) 606-7370 or contact Platinum Balloons with what you have saved.

Short answer: it depends almost entirely on what the balloon is made of. Standard 11-inch latex balloons generally float for 8 to 12 hours. Foil and mylar balloons commonly float for several days to a week or more. Everything else is a variation on those two numbers.

The longer answer is more useful, because knowing why the numbers differ is what lets you plan a party where the balloons still look good at the end of the night.

Latex balloons: 8 to 12 hours

Latex is a natural material, and at a microscopic level it is porous. Helium is the second smallest molecule in existence. Put those two facts together and you get the core problem: helium escapes straight through the wall of a latex balloon, continuously, from the moment it is filled.

A standard 11-inch latex balloon inflated with helium will typically float for 8 to 12 hours indoors at a comfortable temperature. It does not pop or deflate visibly at the end. It slowly loses lift, sinks lower, and eventually rests on the floor while still looking mostly inflated.

Size matters here. A larger latex balloon holds proportionally more helium relative to its surface area, so bigger latex balloons generally float longer than small ones. A 5-inch latex balloon filled with helium has a very short working life.

Sealant-treated latex: considerably longer

There is a common treatment applied to the inside of latex balloons that coats the interior surface and dramatically slows how fast helium escapes. Balloons treated this way typically last considerably longer than untreated latex.

This is the single most important thing to ask about if your event is the day after your pickup, or if it runs long. It is also why a balloon from a professional balloon store often outlasts one from a party aisle, even when they look identical on the shelf.

Foil and mylar: several days to a week or more

Foil balloons, sometimes called mylar, are made from a metalized plastic film rather than latex. That film is not porous in the same way, so helium escapes far more slowly.

Foil balloons commonly stay floating for several days to a week or more, and larger ones can go longer. This is why number balloons, letter balloons, and character-shaped balloons are almost always foil. Nobody wants a big “30” on the floor before the party starts.

The tradeoff is aesthetic. Foil has a shiny, reflective finish that reads differently than the soft matte look of latex. Most well-designed arrangements use both, which is the approach we take on the custom work in our balloon design guide.

Bubble and specialty balloons

Clear stretchy bubble balloons sit in their own category. They are made from a flexible plastic that holds helium well, and they typically outlast latex by a wide margin. They also hold their shape rather than sagging, which makes them useful for arrangements that need to look crisp for an extended period.

What shortens float time

Four things work against you.

Heat. Warm air causes helium to expand and accelerates its escape through the balloon wall. A balloon left in a hot car will not just deflate faster, it can stretch, distort, or pop.

Direct sunlight. Sun is worse than ambient heat, and it is rough on latex specifically. Dark-colored latex absorbs more heat than light colors, so a navy balloon in July sun will fail before a white one sitting next to it.

Cold. Cold contracts helium. Balloons carried outside in winter can look noticeably deflated within minutes. The good news is this one is often temporary, and they partially recover once back in a warm room.

Altitude and air pressure changes. Less of a concern in South Jersey, but a balloon inflated fully at ground level and taken somewhere meaningfully higher will expand.

Air-filled designs do not have this problem at all

This is the part most people do not know, and it changes how you plan a large event.

Balloon garlands, balloon columns, and most large backdrop installations are built with air, not helium. Nothing is floating, so nothing is fighting gravity. An air-filled garland can be built the day before an event and look exactly the same at the end of the party, and it will often hold up for days afterward.

That is why a full photo backdrop is frequently more practical than a large helium display, not less. If you are planning something substantial for a baby shower, a graduation, or a milestone birthday, the air-filled route usually gives you a longer window and a calmer setup day.

Planning your timing

A practical way to think about it:

Event is today, guests arrive in a few hours. Untreated latex is fine.

Event is tonight and you are picking up this morning. Ask about sealant-treated latex, or lean on foil.

Event is tomorrow. Foil, bubble, or air-filled construction.

Display needs to last the weekend. Air-filled garland or column, with foil accents.

Outdoors in summer. Foil, lighter colors, shade where possible, extra weight, and the shortest gap you can manage between inflation and event.

When in doubt, tell the store when the event actually starts and ends rather than when you want to pick up. The recommendation changes based on that.

Talk to someone before you order

Float time is one of those things that is easy to get wrong and impossible to fix on the day. At Platinum Balloons in Turnersville, this is the first conversation we have with most customers, because it drives everything else about the design.

We are at 9A Shoppers Ln in the Turnersville Square Shopping Center, open seven days a week, serving Washington Township, Sewell, Blackwood, Sicklerville, Deptford, Williamstown, Glassboro, Mullica Hill, and the surrounding South Jersey communities. Come visit the store, read our story, or call (856) 606-7370. You can also send us your event details and we will work out the timing with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do helium balloons last?

Standard 11-inch latex balloons generally float for 8 to 12 hours once inflated with helium. Latex balloons treated with a sealant typically last considerably longer. Foil and mylar balloons hold helium far better and commonly stay floating for several days to a week or more. Heat, direct sunlight, and cold all shorten float time.

Do foil balloons last longer than latex balloons?

Yes, substantially. Foil is made from a metalized plastic film that is far less porous than natural latex, so helium escapes much more slowly. This is why number balloons and character balloons are almost always foil.

Can I inflate balloons the night before a party?

Foil balloons, yes, comfortably. Untreated latex balloons, generally no, since you will likely be at the end of their float window by the time guests arrive. Sealant-treated latex gives you much more flexibility. Air-filled garlands and columns can be built well in advance.

Why do helium balloons deflate faster in hot weather?

Heat causes helium to expand and speeds up how fast it escapes through the balloon wall. Direct sunlight makes it worse, and dark-colored latex absorbs more heat than light colors. A hot car is the single most common cause of balloons failing early.

Do balloons deflate in cold weather?

They appear to. Cold contracts helium, so balloons taken outside in winter can look deflated within minutes. They often partially recover when brought back into a warm room, which is why they behave differently than heat damage.

How long does a balloon garland last?

Balloon garlands are typically built with air rather than helium, so they are not fighting gravity at all. A well-built air-filled garland can be installed the day before an event and commonly holds up for days.

What is the longest-lasting type of balloon?

For floating arrangements, foil and bubble balloons last longest. For displays overall, air-filled construction like garlands and columns outlasts every helium option, because nothing needs to stay airborne.

Does balloon size affect how long it floats?

Yes. Larger latex balloons hold more helium relative to their surface area and generally float longer than small ones. Very small latex balloons have a notably short float life.

Where can I get long-lasting balloons in South Jersey?

It is one of the most common searches in party planning, and one of the most frustrating. You have the balloons. You have the party. What you do not have is a way to get them off the ground. Searching “where to get balloons blown up near me” turns up a mix of big box stores, grocery chains, and florists, and it is rarely clear which of them will actually help you.

This guide walks through how helium inflation works, what to think about before you go, and how to plan the timing so your balloons look right when your guests walk in rather than three hours earlier.

Why helium inflation is not a do-it-yourself job for most people

Helium seems simple. It is a gas, it goes in a balloon, the balloon floats. In practice there are a few reasons people end up looking for a store instead.

The first is equipment. Filling a balloon properly requires a regulator that controls flow and pressure. Overfill a latex balloon and it stretches thin, loses its shape, and deflates faster. Underfill it and it will not float at all. The difference between a balloon that looks full and round and one that looks sad and pear-shaped is almost entirely inflation technique.

The second is volume. A single tank fills fewer balloons than most people expect, and the math gets worse as balloon size goes up. An 11-inch latex balloon and an 18-inch foil balloon are very different jobs.

The third is time. Inflating thirty balloons by hand takes longer than anyone plans for, and it usually happens on the morning of the event when there is the least time to spare.

For most people planning a birthday, a shower, or a graduation, handing the job to a balloon store is the simpler path. That is a large part of what we do at Platinum Balloons in Turnersville.

What to think about before you go

A little preparation makes the trip faster.

Know your count. Have a rough number in mind. Thirty balloons for a table cluster is a different conversation than five for a mailbox.

Know your colors. If you are matching an invitation, a school logo, or a dessert table, bring a photo or the invitation itself. Color matching is easier to do standing in front of the actual balloons than describing over the phone. We go deeper into this in our guide to matching balloon colors to your party palette.

Know your transport. This is the one people forget. A car full of inflated helium balloons is mostly balloons. Thirty balloons will not fit in a sedan with three passengers. If you are picking up a large order, think about whether you need a second trip, a bigger vehicle, or an alternative like a weighted arrangement that travels flat and gets assembled on site.

Know your timing. Balloons do not last forever once filled. More on that below.

Latex versus foil, and why it changes everything

The single biggest factor in how your balloons behave is what they are made of.

Latex balloons are the classic round balloons. They are porous at a microscopic level, which means helium slowly escapes through the balloon wall itself. A standard 11-inch latex balloon generally floats for 8 to 12 hours once inflated. Latex treated with a sealant typically lasts considerably longer, which matters a great deal if you are inflating the night before.

Foil and mylar balloons are the shiny ones, including number balloons, letter balloons, and character shapes. Foil does not breathe the way latex does, so these hold helium far better and commonly stay floating for several days to a week or more.

This is why a store will often ask what the balloons are for before recommending a mix. A dessert table centerpiece that needs to look perfect at 2:00 PM has different requirements than a mailbox display that needs to survive until Sunday evening. Our full breakdown lives in how long helium balloons actually last.

Heat, sun, and the outdoor problem

Temperature is the variable most people do not account for.

Helium expands when it warms. A balloon inflated in an air-conditioned store and then left in a hot car for forty minutes can stretch, distort, or pop outright. Direct summer sun on latex is particularly rough, and dark colors absorb more heat than light ones.

Cold works the opposite way. Helium contracts in cold air, so balloons brought outside in winter can look noticeably deflated within minutes, then partially recover once they come back into a warm room.

If your event is outdoors, say so. There are ways to design around it, including using more foil, choosing lighter colors, weighting arrangements more heavily against wind, and timing the pickup closer to the event. For outdoor business events specifically, we cover the planning side in grand opening and corporate balloon décor.

When inflated balloons are not the right answer

Sometimes the thing you actually want is not a bunch of floating balloons.

Balloon garlands, for example, are usually built with air rather than helium. They are attached to a wall, a table, an arch frame, or a backdrop, so there is nothing to float. That is why a garland can be built the day before and still look perfect, while a helium bouquet cannot. Balloon columns work the same way.

If you are picturing a full photo backdrop, an entrance display, or a dramatic wall of balloons, what you are picturing is probably air-filled construction, not inflation. The difference is worth understanding before you order, and we lay it out in balloon garland versus arch versus column.

Getting balloons blown up in Turnersville

Platinum Balloons is a local balloon boutique at 9A Shoppers Ln in the Turnersville Square Shopping Center, Turnersville, NJ 08012. We are open seven days a week, and customers come to us from across Gloucester and Camden counties including Washington Township, Sewell, Blackwood, Sicklerville, Deptford, Williamstown, Glassboro, and Mullica Hill.

Rather than pulling a bag off a party aisle shelf and hoping, you can stand in the store, see the colors in person, and talk through what the balloons are actually for.
Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I get balloons blown up near me in South Jersey?

Platinum Balloons is a local balloon boutique in Turnersville where balloons are inflated with helium for you. We are located at 9A Shoppers Ln in the Turnersville Square Shopping Center, Turnersville, NJ 08012, open seven days a week. Call (856) 606-7370 to talk through what you need.

Who inflates balloons with helium?

Balloon stores, some florists, and some party retailers offer helium inflation. A dedicated balloon store is usually the better option for custom work, because the staff can advise on balloon type, color matching, float time, and how the arrangement will hold up for the length of your event rather than simply filling what you hand them.

How long will helium balloons stay floating?

It depends on the balloon type. Standard 11-inch latex balloons generally float for 8 to 12 hours once inflated with helium. Latex balloons treated with a sealant typically last considerably longer. Foil and mylar balloons hold helium far better and commonly stay floating for several days to a week or more. Heat, direct sunlight, and outdoor conditions shorten float time for every balloon type.

Can I buy balloons already inflated?

Yes. We sell helium balloons and custom balloon bouquets at our Turnersville store, so you can pick up and go straight to the celebration.

Should I get my balloons inflated the day before or the day of?

For latex balloons filled with helium, the day of the event is safest unless the balloons are sealant-treated. Foil balloons have much more flexibility and can usually be filled a day or more ahead. Air-filled designs like garlands and columns do not have this constraint at all, since nothing is floating.

Why do my balloons deflate so fast in summer?

Heat causes helium to expand and accelerates how quickly it escapes through a latex balloon wall. Direct sunlight makes it worse, and dark-colored latex absorbs more heat than light colors. For outdoor summer events, foil balloons and shaded placement both help considerably.

Do balloons need weights?

Any helium-filled arrangement that is not tied to something will float away, so yes. Weights also matter outdoors, where even a light breeze will move an underweighted bouquet. The heavier and taller the arrangement, the more weight it needs.
